Following the success of the ICE Bridges to Schools event at St Johns HS, North Inch Campus last September, Balfour Beatty have agreed to repeat this fantastic event at Kinross Primary School from the 12th-16th of March. In this way Balfour Beatty hope to engage with up to 520 P5-S1 pupils from local schools.
The timing of this event will capitalise on the divergence of the Year of the Young Person, British Science and Engineering Week 2018 and the 200th Anniversary of the Institution of Civil Engineers and this profile will be used to focus young minds to the principles and practical application of STEM in engineering and the challenges and rewards associated with working as a team to complete a project.
Duncan Gardner, Community Benefits Adviser for Balfour Beatty said “Balfour Beatty’s focus on Community Benefits is key to ensuring that our works provide the best possible value for the communities in which we operate. The ‘Bridges to Schools’ event is a fantastic opportunity to awaken bright young minds to the exciting opportunity of a career in construction through active learning.”
This event forms a small part of the excellent Community Benefits that Balfour Beatty is providing as part of their involvement in the Perth Transport Futures project.
Balfour Beatty is also working with Perth Academy on the Design Engineer Construct! programme which lets young people explore professions in architecture, engineering and the built environment at a cost to Balfour Beatty of £6000 per year. There is also an investment of time and expertise from the company to help support the delivery of the programme.
The recently released summary of Community Benefits involvements show that Balfour Beatty engaged with 954 pupils and students in 2017, provided 28 weeks of work experience and 239 days of paid work experience through Phase One of the Perth Transport Futures Project alone. Further benefits are being created for Perth and Kinross through the Almondbank Flood Protection Scheme.
In 2018 Balfour Beatty will be continuing their commitment to involving communities in Perth & Kinross in their activities.
