Drivers in Highland Perthshire face a 34-mile detour due to overnight road closures for viaduct repairs
Highland Perthshire: Drivers are in for a bit of a hassle. There’s a 34-mile detour coming up because of some overnight road closures. Starting Saturday, the B847 will be shut down between Calvine and Struan from 10 PM to 6 AM.
During those hours, folks will need to take a longer route through Tummel Bridge and Killiecrankie. Perth & Kinross Council has mapped out this detour, which will take you along the B847, B846, B8019, B8079, and back to the B847.
Now, there is a shorter way to go, but it’s still going to add at least 30 miles to your trip. The closures near Blair Atholl are set to last until February 28, as part of a £1.25 million project that kicked off in December.
Network Rail is the one behind these repairs on the Garry Viaduct, which has been standing for 161 years. They’re doing masonry work to make sure the structure stays strong and safe for trains on the Highland Main Line.
Andy McManus, the project manager, mentioned that this work is crucial for keeping services reliable. They’re also investing millions into the Highland Main Line this year, including a £3 million bridge replacement project at Killiecrankie.
That old bridge over the railway was recently taken down, and a new one is already in place. They expect to wrap up that work by March 2025. Network Rail appreciates the community’s patience while they tackle this important project, which is set to finish on April 25.
