Plans for 94 homes in Yorkshire farmland may uncover a hidden Medieval castle
Bingley: Exciting news! Plans are in motion for 94 new homes on farmland that might be hiding the remains of a Medieval castle. Bradford Council just gave the thumbs up for this project at Coolgardie Farm.
Originally, this site was eyed for a big business park, but that idea fell through after the 2008 financial crisis. Now, Avant Homes Yorkshire is stepping in to create much-needed housing. But before they break ground, they need to check for any historical treasures lurking beneath the soil.
Some locals are not too happy about the new homes. They’ve raised concerns about losing green spaces and the strain on local services like schools and transport. One resident even questioned the need for more houses in the area.
Interestingly, the West Yorkshire Archaeology Advisory Service has pointed out that there might have been a castle nearby, based on old maps and historical references. They’re urging that any development doesn’t cover up potential archaeological finds.
While there’s no visible evidence of a castle now, the area’s history suggests it could be significant. If there was a castle, there might have been a village too, and that could extend into the new housing site.
Bradford Council has made it clear that before any construction starts, an archaeological survey must be done. They want to ensure that if there are any historical remains, they’re properly recorded and preserved.
On a positive note, the developers have committed to making 20% of the new homes affordable. Plus, they’ll contribute funds to improve local bus shelters and support biodiversity in the area.
So, it looks like this project could bring new homes and maybe even some fascinating history to light!
