The RSPCA reports a shocking increase in XL Bully abuse since the ban
Kent: The RSPCA has noticed a troubling rise in reports of abuse towards XL Bully dogs since the breed was banned last year. They’ve seen more cases of intentional harm and beatings, which is really concerning.
The ban on XL Bullies kicked in on February 1, 2024, after a series of attacks led to public outcry. Now, it’s illegal to breed or rehome these dogs, and the penalties are pretty severe. You could face hefty fines or even jail time if you’re caught with one.
Owners wanting to keep their dogs had to jump through hoops, like applying for special permits and following strict rules. This included neutering their pets and keeping them muzzled in public. It’s a tough situation for many dog owners.
Sadly, the aftermath of the ban hasn’t been pretty. Just weeks after it started, a puppy was found dead in a cage in Kent, and another dog was thrown off a flyover in Sheffield. It’s heartbreaking to see such cruelty.
In a recent case, a woman in Birkenhead faced court for neglecting her XL Bully so badly that the dog had to be put down. The poor pup was found emaciated and barely able to stand. It’s just awful.
According to the RSPCA, reports of intentional harm to XL Bullies shot up by 164% in the first eight months of this year compared to last year. Abandonment cases skyrocketed by 692%, and neglect reports increased by 239%. These numbers are alarming.
Dr. Samantha Gaines from the RSPCA expressed her concern, saying that the rise in abuse could be linked to the pressures of the ban and the ongoing cost of living crisis. It’s heartbreaking to think that many dogs might be put down just because of their appearance.
