Alec Baldwin is suing New Mexico officials for malicious prosecution over the Rust manslaughter trial that ended in his favor
Santa Fe: So, Alec Baldwin is taking legal action against some New Mexico officials. He claims they wrongfully prosecuted him for manslaughter.
Last year, Baldwin was on trial for the tragic shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while filming the movie Rust.
The case against him fell apart in court and was eventually dropped altogether.
Now, Baldwin’s filed a complaint saying that the district attorney and a special prosecutor messed up big time. He accuses them of getting false testimony and hiding evidence.
In the complaint, it’s mentioned that the special prosecutor wanted to “teach Baldwin a lesson” because she thought he was an “arrogant prick.”
Baldwin’s team is pushing for accountability, stating that the officials need to face the music for their actions. They believe that while no verdict can erase the trauma he faced, it’s important to hold these officials responsible.
In December, the case against Baldwin officially wrapped up when the prosecutor withdrew her appeal after the case was dismissed.
She mentioned that the state faced many hurdles that made it tough to prosecute Baldwin properly.
Her focus was always on seeking justice for Halyna Hutchins, and she expressed regret that Baldwin wouldn’t be held accountable.
Baldwin’s lawyers called the case’s collapse a “vindication,” saying it proved he committed no crime.
The incident that led to Hutchins’s death happened back in October 2021. Baldwin, who was both the lead actor and a co-producer, accidentally fired a prop gun during a rehearsal, which tragically killed Hutchins and injured director Joel Souza.
If convicted, Baldwin could have faced up to 18 months in prison, but he always maintained his innocence.
Ultimately, the case was dismissed after it was revealed that prosecutors had withheld evidence that could have clarified how live rounds ended up on set.
