This card comes just weeks before he resigns due to his handling of a serious abuse scandal involving John Smyth, a notorious abuser. The Archbishop faced heavy criticism for not reporting Smyth to the police when he had the chance.
After an independent review, it was clear that he had a responsibility to act. Smyth, who abused over 100 boys, passed away in 2018 without facing justice.
Justin Welby will officially leave his role on January 6 and won’t be participating in any Christmas services, including the big sermon at Canterbury Cathedral.
