The MV Glen Sannox is set to begin its maiden voyage from Troon to Brodick, promising improved ferry service for Arran residents.
Troon: The MV Glen Sannox is finally ready to take passengers after a long wait. It’s been through sea trials and is set to sail to Brodick on January 13.
People are really hoping this ferry will make a big difference. The service to Arran has had its fair share of issues lately, so fingers crossed!
However, there’s a catch. The new ferry won’t be leaving from Ardrossan, which is the main port for the island. It turns out the design of the ship means it can’t dock there until some major upgrades are done.
Even though the Scottish Government gave the green light for the harbour project back in 2018, costs have been rising. They had to rethink things in November 2023.
Now, the project is under review, and talks between the government, Peel Ports, and North Ayrshire Council are still ongoing. So, even if they do start the harbour work, it could be years before the ferry can use that route.
For now, the Glen Sannox and its sister ship, the MV Glen Rosa, will be sailing from Troon. This means a longer trip for everyone heading to the island.
It’s been a long journey for this ferry. Back in December 2012, the Scottish Government announced plans for two new eco-friendly vessels. But it’s been a bumpy road since then.
From the shipyard going into administration to delays and rising costs, it’s been quite the saga. But now, it looks like the Glen Sannox is finally ready to set sail!
