Seoul: So, here’s the scoop. An arrest warrant has been issued for Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea’s impeached president. This is all about his recent attempt to declare martial law, which didn’t go over well.
The anti-corruption agency got a court to approve this warrant after Yoon skipped out on several requests to come in for questioning. They’re looking into some serious stuff, like insurrection and abuse of power.
Yoon’s legal team is pushing back, calling the warrant and the charges “unlawful.” One of his lawyers, Yoon Kab Keun, said the president isn’t trying to dodge the investigation. He believes it should be handled by the constitutional court instead of through criminal charges.
He also mentioned that Yoon would show up for any hearings at the constitutional court. This whole situation is just adding fuel to the fire of South Korea’s political crisis, which kicked off back on December 3 when Yoon declared martial law. That move led to massive protests and his impeachment, along with his acting successor, Han Duck Soo.
The warrant is good until January 6, and if it’s enforced, Yoon could end up at the Seoul Detention Center. This is a big deal because he’s the first sitting president in South Korea to face the possibility of arrest.
