A tragic bus accident in Ethiopia claims the lives of at least 71 wedding guests, with many more injured in the devastating incident
Sidama: A terrible accident happened when a bus full of wedding guests crashed into a river. It’s just heartbreaking.
Reports say the bus was overloaded and lost control on a winding road. It plunged into the river while everyone was returning from a wedding celebration.
Witnesses described the scene as chaotic, with people rushing to help those trapped inside. Some even jumped into the river to lend a hand.
Local traffic police mentioned that the bus veered off the road and fell into the water near the Gelan bridge in Bona Zuria Woreda.
Wosenyeleh Simion, a spokesperson for the local government, confirmed that 68 men and three women lost their lives. It’s just so tragic.
Five others are in critical condition at the hospital, and it’s tough to hear that some families lost multiple loved ones in this accident.
Sidama is about 300 kilometers south of Addis Ababa, the capital. Sadly, traffic accidents like this are all too common in Ethiopia due to poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance.
Just a few years back, another bus accident claimed nearly 40 lives, mostly students, when a bus fell into a river in the north. It’s a real wake-up call for road safety.
