A family in Atherton is mourning the loss of Mellodie-Ocean Jarman and her baby, Athena-Pearl, after a sudden illness led to their deaths on the same day.
On a Friday, January 31st, Mellodie felt faint and dizzy on her way to a scan. Doctors initially thought she simply had low iron and sent her home with medicine and antibiotics.
The next day, she felt even worse at home, saying she couldn’t see or breathe. Mellodie went to Bolton Hospital very quickly, where doctors sadly confirmed she had passed away.
An emergency C-section was performed in an attempt to save Mellodie’s daughter, Athena-Pearl. Tragically, Athena lacked oxygen and also passed away on the same day.
Mellodie and Daniel Darbyshire were a close couple who worked together at The Thomas Burke Wetherspoons. They were both eagerly anticipating the birth of their baby.
After the devastating news, Athena was brought to see Mellodie. The family spent their final moments together inside the hospital where this took place.
Athena, still on life support, was placed in her mother’s arms one last time before the machines were turned off after this visit.
Daniel pushed his daughter from the mortuary in a pram. The family washed and baptized her before she was laid to rest.
Mellodie’s uncle, Steven Darby, started a fundraiser to help Daniel with funeral costs and to ease the family’s financial burdens.
As Mellodie had no prior health issues, authorities started an investigation into her death. A coroner’s inquest will likely be held to determine what occurred.
Steven stated that they don’t yet know the full story, and the investigation will share more information later on, emphasizing she was healthy with no complications.
He added that they cannot understand what happened and that he started a fundraiser for the family to alleviate their financial worries during this difficult time.
Steven shared that the hospital experience felt overwhelming, but the medical team supported them greatly, doing their best to save the baby.
Mellodie’s mom, Justine, described her as sassy and someone who always spoke her mind, finding humor in situations all the time.
