David Ball marks 50 years of Coastguard service, starting in 1974, serving on multiple teams, responding to 2,000+ calls, and aiding his community.
Back then, they didn’t have pagers. A loud Maroon sound signaled emergencies. The boom alerted the team in the village. They knew it was time to respond.
Mr. Ball worked at power stations and moved around the country for work. He served on three different Coastguard teams. He helped many people during that time.
In 1997, he joined the Barry Island team and is a key member of their group. Thirteen volunteers work together there now.
Mr. Ball responded to over 2,000 calls during his long career as a volunteer. He is dedicated and very reliable.
Barry Island Coastguard Officer, Chris Fletcher, said Dave gives a lot of time. Chris noted Dave helps new team members by sharing his knowledge and helping them grow.
Dave is a selfless man and a great person who always helps other people. He makes time for everyone around him.
He helps All Saints Church in Barry, and is also a street pastor. He works in Cardiff on weekends assisting people on Friday and Saturday nights.
People call him “a true gent” and say he is great to be around. Everyone appreciates his commitment.
The Coastguard, church, and community are grateful for his long service. He always volunteers his time freely.
Barry is popular with tourists, making the local Coastguard team important. The area has a unique coastline with the world’s second highest tide range, which can reach fifteen meters.
Fifty years marks Mr. Ball’s Coastguard service. This shows his dedication to others as he helps those who need him.
