Kye Thomas faces trial for escaping custody and other charges after a manhunt in Basingstoke
Basingstoke: So, Kye Thomas, a 27-year-old guy with no fixed address, got caught after a big manhunt. He allegedly escaped from police custody at Winchester Hospital on November 29.
He’s also in hot water for assaulting a police officer and for a burglary where he supposedly threatened someone to steal a mobile phone.
In court on January 8, Thomas said he didn’t escape or commit burglary, but he did admit to assaulting an emergency worker. Quite the situation, right?
Judge Angela Morris was curious about his plea since the police said he made a run for it when his handcuffs were off at the hospital.
But Thomas’ lawyer, Chloe Jay, argued that it all comes down to whether he was legally in custody when he escaped.
She mentioned that he had been released on license for a previous crime but was sent back to prison without a clear reason.
Jay told the judge she wasn’t convinced he was in lawful custody at the hospital, which is a pretty big deal.
The prosecution, represented by Simon Walters, said they’d have all the evidence ready by January 28.
Mark your calendars—the trial is set to kick off on July 2.
