York: Have you been to your local library lately? It’s a great spot to grab a book or catch up with friends over coffee.
Maybe you’ve visited Acomb Explore to use the computers or took the kids to Tang Hall Explore for some storytelling fun. There’s so much happening!
York boasts 15 libraries and even a mobile one that travels around. They’re not just about books; they’re community hubs with cafés and clubs for everyone.
From chess to crafts, there’s something for everyone. Plus, projects like History Misbehaves at Acomb Explore bring locals together to create a community radio show.
But here’s something you might not know: you can actually become a co-owner of York’s libraries and archives!
Every library and the city archive, which has records dating back to the 12th century, is run by Explore York Libraries and Archives, a not-for-profit organization.
They’re looking for more community members. Right now, about 300 locals are involved, but many library users don’t even know they can join.
For just £1, you can buy a share and help keep York’s libraries thriving. It’s a small price to pay for a say in how things are run.
More members mean more strength and better funding options. Plus, your £1 share lets you get involved in decisions about the libraries.
Jenny Layfield, the chief executive, says being a community member gives you a voice and a chance to support Explore York Libraries and Archives.
Members elect Community Directors to represent them, and there are regular chances to meet and share your thoughts.
