Bedminster: One of the biggest community events in the city is making a comeback next weekend. The Bedminster Winter Lanterns event is set for January 18, and it’s got a new route this year!

Community groups and local schools will parade with hundreds of giant lanterns through Ashton, Southville, and Bedminster. It’s a fun tradition that started over ten years ago, and it’s a great way for Year 3 kids to get creative during the autumn.

This year, instead of the usual route, the parade will turn left onto East Street towards Asda. It’s a nice change, and I think it’ll be exciting for everyone involved.

Organizers have been busy raising funds through a crowdfunder, and they managed to collect over £4,000! While the kids have been crafting their lanterns, there have also been community workshops at the Philip Street Chapel, giving everyone a chance to join in and make their own lantern.

If you want to get involved, there’s still time! The last workshop is happening this Saturday, January 11, with sessions at 10 am and 1:30 pm. They’re also looking for about ten more volunteers to help with the parade.

Local pharmacist Ade Williams, who’s part of the organizing committee, shared how this event brings the community together. “Each year, over 2,000 residents, artists, and local leaders come together to light up the streets and celebrate hope for the new year,” he said.

It’s a beautiful sight, with hundreds of lanterns created by people of all ages. The excitement builds as the Bristol Samba band plays, and everyone waits to see the amazing lanterns in all shapes and sizes.

For months leading up to the event, artists work with local groups and schools to help them bring their ideas to life. It’s all about creativity, teamwork, and having fun!

Just a heads up, roads in BS3 will be closed on January 18 from 3 pm to 7 pm for the event. The parade kicks off around 5 pm when it gets dark, and there will be live music along the route too.
