An inquest has been opened into the tragic death of Yvonne Jones, who was struck by a car in Benfleet while on a day trip
Benfleet: Yvonne Jones, an 85-year-old, was hit by a Jaguar while crossing London Road on December 7. Sadly, the driver didn’t stop.
The inquest into her death started on Friday. Coroner Michelle Brown mentioned that they would pause the inquest so Essex Police could keep investigating.
Police arrested a man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving but later released him while they continue their inquiries.
Mrs. Jones was on a coach trip to London with her 90-year-old sister. They had just gotten off the bus at a spot called Bread and Cheese Hill when the accident happened.
People nearby tried to help with CPR until paramedics arrived, but unfortunately, they couldn’t save her. She was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on December 8.
A post-mortem exam revealed that the provisional cause of death was brainstem transection, but they’re still waiting for more tests.
Coroner Brown said that Essex Police asked to pause the investigation until they figure out if there will be any charges.
They’re looking for witnesses who might have seen a Jaguar saloon car in the area around the time of the accident.
Mrs. Jones’s family shared a heartfelt tribute, expressing their deep sadness over her passing. They remembered her as a loving mum, nan, and sister who had lived in Australia for over 50 years.
They will miss her humor and kindness, saying, “We love you – rest in peace, mum.”
