Birmingham plans to shift to fortnightly bin collections by April 2025, aiming to cut costs and improve waste management services for residents
Birmingham: Big changes are coming for bin collections in the city. Starting in April 2025, some residents will see their waste collection shift from weekly to every two weeks. This move is part of the council’s plan to save money and improve services.
Last year, the council suggested this change, and it didn’t sit well with many locals. But now, they’ve confirmed it will roll out gradually. Along with the new schedule, there will be a weekly food waste collection and a second recycling bin just for paper and card.
The council is taking a phased approach, starting with certain areas first. For instance, Sutton Mere Green and Sutton Four Oaks could be among the first to experience these changes in just a few months.
Some areas might have to wait until later in the year for the new system. Council member Majid Mahmood reassured residents that the new food waste collection will help reduce general waste, making the transition smoother.
He also mentioned that if anyone can’t fit an extra recycling bin, they’ll be given a reusable sack instead. The council is trying to keep everyone informed about these changes as they happen.
These adjustments come after the council faced some tough challenges, including financial issues and rising service demands. They’re hoping this new plan will help get things back on track.
