Plans for a waste recycling facility near the M27 face strong opposition from local planners citing environmental concerns
Fareham: So, there’s this company called Meonbrook Ltd that wants to set up a waste recycling facility near the M27. They plan to process demolition and excavation waste from all over the county at a site off Boarhunt Road, right by Junction 11.
But the folks at Fareham Borough Council are not having it. They’re saying this plan would really mess up the landscape around there. They think it’s just not a good fit for the area.
Meonbrook argues that there’s already similar work happening nearby at a compound run by Highways England, which is dealing with materials from ongoing M27 projects. But the council isn’t buying it. They say there’s no solid proof of that connection.
Interestingly, Meonbrook already has a construction waste recycling site at Down Barn Farm, which is just 75 meters away from where they want to set up this new facility. They got permission for that back in 2019.
The council pointed out that the new site doesn’t seem to be doing any work related to highway maintenance, which is a big part of why they think the application shouldn’t go through. They want the site to go back to being farmland.
Meonbrook insists that their proposed site would actually be better than the current one. They say it has better access and is further away from homes, which sounds like a win-win.
They also claim this new facility would help them recycle more construction waste and produce high-quality materials for reuse in the county. It’s all about supporting those National Highways contracts, they say.
Now, it’s up to Hampshire County Council to make the final call on this application.
