Ardrossan Academy faces another boiler problem, disrupting classes for students and forcing some to work from home.
The school didn’t fully reopen on Monday, January 6. Only the younger students, S1-3, could stay warm in the heated area. They couldn’t fix the boiler right away because they needed to get some parts, and the manufacturer was off until Monday.
This isn’t the first time the boiler has caused chaos. There was a similar problem back in late December. On Monday, the older students, S4-6, were told to work from home using Google Classroom and ACHIEVE online platforms to keep up with their studies for upcoming exams.
Teachers posted content on the forums when they got back to school on Monday. After the first day back, the school shared updates about temporary arrangements to help as many students as possible attend classes while they sort out the heating issue.
Head teacher Anne Anderson wrote a letter to parents, thanking them for their support. She acknowledged the challenges for students but praised their efforts. She mentioned that contractors and engineers were on-site to fix the boiler and that they hoped to have it sorted in a few days.
In the meantime, they’ve got some temporary heaters to help out in the A and B blocks, which should allow more students to come in each day. For the rest of the week, S1-2 students can attend classes normally. Third-year students can come in on Wednesday and Friday, while fourth-year students will be in on Tuesday and Thursday.
S5-6 students are scheduled for double periods at the start and end of Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with work provided for when they’re at home. They can even head home in the middle of the day, and the school is making arrangements for those coming from West Kilbride who might have trouble getting back.
North Ayrshire Council has been contacted for comments on the situation.
