Keady bricklayer Boots urged young builders to prioritize safety in a heartfelt video recorded shortly before his passing
Keady: A well-known bricklayer, Raymond Callaghan, also called ‘Boots’, recorded a touching video just weeks before he passed away. He wanted to share some important advice with young builders, saying, “Don’t make the mistakes I did.”
Raymond, who was diagnosed with a rare lung condition from inhaling cement dust, emphasized the need for personal protective equipment on job sites. He recorded this video a month before his death, hoping to inspire others to take care of their health.
Sadly, he passed away on December 18, just a week before Christmas, at the age of 64, surrounded by his family. He had been living with his condition for several years, trying to manage it as best as he could.
Band of Builders, a charity that helps those in the construction industry facing tough times, was set to start a project at his home. They planned to build a bedroom and wetroom extension as their first project of 2025.
After his passing, the charity shared his last video, highlighting his heartfelt message to younger workers. In the video, Raymond reflected on his long career, starting as an apprentice at 17 and working until 2019.
He shared how his diagnosis came from years of exposure to cement dust, and he wanted to raise awareness for young workers. Wearing an oxygen mask, he spoke candidly about the consequences of ignoring safety advice.
Raymond admitted that while he attended health and safety talks, he often didn’t pay attention, thinking it wouldn’t happen to him. Now, he’s housebound and relies on oxygen, struggling with daily tasks.
He urged young tradespeople to take their health seriously, stressing that it’s more important than worrying about what others think. “You only get one chance at this life,” he said, encouraging them to avoid the mistakes he made.
