Bristol’s ‘Safe Space’ will return, offering support and safety for night-time revelers
This initiative kicks off at the end of the month, specifically on January 31 and February 1. The mobile unit will be set up near Baldwin Street’s Alcohol Recovery Centre. It’s a safe spot for anyone who might need help, especially to tackle issues related to violence against women and girls.
The first pilot in December showed just how much this service is needed. People loved having a secure place to wait for a taxi or get help if they felt lost or had a little mishap, like broken shoes.
Vicky Lee, the Director of Bristol City Centre BID, emphasized how important this initiative is for creating a safer nightlife. They want to make sure everyone knows there’s a place to go if they need support while out on the town.
The second pilot will run on the first pay weekend after Christmas and during the Bristol Light Festival. It’ll be open from 6 PM to 2 AM on Friday and 4 PM to 2 AM on Saturday, aiming to help even more people. Nightlife staff are encouraged to spread the word about this valuable service.
DS Emily Welch from Avon and Somerset Police expressed pride in continuing this partnership. They’re optimistic that this initiative will provide essential support during busy times in the city center.
Bristol has a history of initiatives aimed at making nights out safer for women. Previous campaigns have tackled issues like sexual harassment, and Bristol Nights even offered free training for night-time economy workers to help address these concerns.
