Calderdale Council is considering closing tips to save £180,000, impacting waste services and recycling options for residents.
Calderdale: The council is looking to make some changes to its waste services. They’re trying to save money and balance the budget, which is always a tough spot to be in.
For the second year in a row, they’re thinking about cutting back on household waste and recycling services. This could mean shutting down one of the five centers or closing all of them for a day each week. If they go ahead with this, they could save around £180,000 a year.
Last year, there was quite a stir when they suggested closing the Elland center. People were not happy about it, and the plan was eventually dropped. Some folks thought other centers nearby could handle the load, but others worried it would just lead to more traffic and longer waits, plus a chance of more fly-tipping.
The Calderdale Liberal Democrats have a different idea. They’re suggesting that all five centers close one day a week during quieter times. This way, it might be less disruptive while still saving some cash.
At the upcoming Cabinet meeting, officers will present two options. One is to revisit the Elland center closure, and the other is to stagger the closures of all five centers for two days a week, starting in Autumn 2025.
If they choose either option, the savings would kick in during the 2026-27 fiscal year. They’ve also introduced a permit system for locals, which seems to be helping with costs.
Even with these changes, the council would still meet national standards for service, which suggest having at least one center for every 120,000 people. Right now, Calderdale has a better ratio, with one center for every 42,000 people.
