Northallerton: Local MPs, including Rishi Sunak and Tim Farron, recently met with Minister Lilian Greenwood to discuss the A66 upgrade. They’re really pushing for the £1.3 billion project to dual the remaining single carriageway stretches between Scotch Corner and Penrith.

Originally set to kick off in early 2025, the project hit a snag after the new Government paused it following the General Election in July. Sunak and Farron made their case for why this work needs to start ASAP.

Sunak pointed out that the A66 has a poor safety record, which is a big deal. Just days after their meeting, there was another serious accident on that stretch, highlighting the urgent need for improvements.

The plan is to upgrade the notorious 50-mile stretch of road, which got planning consent back in March 2024. The upgrade aims to enhance safety and capacity, making it a much safer route for everyone.

However, the new Government has put the whole scheme under review, looking at it alongside other transport projects as part of a multi-year spending review. A spokesperson from the Department for Transport reassured that they take road safety seriously and are committed to reducing accidents.

Sunak expressed his frustration over the delays, especially since the project is ready to go. Earlier this year, there was also a legal challenge from an anti-roads group, but that was dismissed in October.

He emphasized that the delay is tough for those who rely on this vital transport link and for communities living near the road, who face daily dangers from the congested sections.

In their meeting, they reiterated safety concerns, noting that twelve people have died on the route since 2023. The recent serious collision on the North Yorkshire section, which sent three people to the hospital, was a stark reminder of why this upgrade is so necessary.
