Gloucester: There’s a new push in Parliament to help people dealing with domestic abuse. A Labour MP, Alex McIntyre, is proposing a law that would give victims paid time off work. This would let them focus on their safety and well-being.
The idea is to offer up to 10 days of “safe leave.” This time could be used for finding a safe place, handling health issues, or even going to police interviews. It’s all about giving people the support they need when they’re in a tough spot.
McIntyre has been talking to local organizations to get a feel for how domestic violence affects his community. He wants to make sure that survivors have better support at work, and safe leave is a big part of that conversation.
He mentioned that this bill is meant to help victims tackle various challenges, like finding housing or attending counseling. It’s a step towards making workplaces safer for those affected by domestic violence.
McIntyre is also backing the Labour Government’s goal to cut violence against women and girls in half over the next decade. He believes this bill would fit right in with those efforts.
However, getting this bill passed won’t be easy. Private members’ bills often struggle to find time in Parliament. Still, McIntyre is determined to keep the conversation going and push for change.
He plans to introduce his bill using a special process that allows him to speak for 10 minutes about why it’s important. If all goes well, it could move forward for further debate.
