Parliament hosted discussions on Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s growth. Leaders addressed housing, transport, and strategies for improving living standards.
The Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority organized the event. It occurred in the House of Commons. Panelists came from several groups, including AstraZeneca, ARU Peterborough, and the Cambridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. The Cambridge Delivery Group and England’s Economic Heartlands also participated.
They shared ideas about local growth and talked about housing and transport problems. Over 60 people attended the event, representing various groups. Established businesses, start-ups, and local government sent representatives. The National Wealth Fund, Members of Parliament, and national stakeholder organizations also joined.
The event title was “Driving Growth for the UK,” focusing on Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Andrew Pakes, MP, and Sam Carling, MP, co-sponsored it.
The Mayor, Dr Nik Johnson, spoke about the importance of growth in the area. He said it helps living standards, potentially raising wages and increasing opportunities. He emphasized that everyone deserves housing and education, and that social connections and a healthy environment are crucial.
Councillor Sarah Conboy discussed how Huntingdonshire helps drive economic growth, benefiting Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. She emphasized that the event builds partnerships for later, and a future event is planned in Huntingdon on February 10.
Councillor Chris Boden shared his thoughts on how Fenland boosts regional economic growth. He was glad to showcase its strengths, highlighting Fenland as a hub for investment, innovation, and growth. He wants to ensure a prosperous future.
Councillor Lucy Nethsingha commented that the event highlighted the strengths of Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. She spoke about the region’s leadership in innovation and how events like this strengthen connections and attract funding.
Councillor Peter McDonald attended the event and said Cambridgeshire is key, acting as a driving force in the UK’s economy. He noted the region’s ability to attract talent and investment.
Councillor Elisa Meschini spoke and said that working together is key to delivering the needed economic growth. She emphasized that communities will get support this way.
Councillor Dennis Jones added that the event showed Peterborough’s potential, bringing regional partners together. He noted the city’s strengths in areas like innovation and showcasing Peterborough’s infrastructure and economic growth.
