An 83-year-old woman in Canvey faces freezing conditions due to an unfinished ceiling
Canvey: Josephine Geary, who’s 83, lives with her son-in-law, Steve Robins, in First Avenue. Their home has been dealing with leaks in the extension for a while now.
Three months ago, they had to take down the extension ceiling, but it still hasn’t been replaced. So, Josephine has been stuck in freezing conditions ever since.
Steve says it’s nearly impossible to heat the house right now. He’s been in touch with Castle Point Council and the contractor, MCP, but they just keep passing the blame.
He mentioned, “The ceiling is wide open, and all the cold air is rushing in. It’s freezing in here. Just before Christmas, the council dropped off a tiny heater because of our complaints.”
He added that the heater only warms up one person. This issue has dragged on for too long, and it keeps getting postponed.
“The council blames MCP, and MCP blames the council. It’s a never-ending cycle. Even if we shut the door, we can’t keep the heat in. It’s pointless,” Steve said.
He was expecting the council to come by on Monday to check things out, but they never showed up.
“My mother-in-law has heart problems, and with all these viruses going around, it just makes everything worse. She sits right by the radiator, but it doesn’t help. The cold makes her knees stiff,” he explained.
“We keep getting pushed around. Someone needs to take responsibility and fix this. Josephine has lived here since the house was built in the mid-60s, always paid her rent, and she’s being treated poorly.”
Castle Point Council and MCP have been contacted for their comments on the situation.
