He said she reached out to him, looking for help with her upcoming trial for allegedly assaulting her partner.
Apparently, a friend of hers, Mel Sykes, connected her with Green. Mel had a similar situation and got her charges dropped, so Caroline thought he could help. Green opened up about their last chat, saying he felt her fear and vulnerability. It’s just so sad.
He recalled that she called him about three weeks before her tragic death on February 15, 2020. She was close to tears, and he could hear the pain in her voice. To lighten the mood a bit, he joked that if she started crying, he’d hang up. It seemed to help her a little, but the situation was still really tough.
What really got to her was the body-cam footage from the police on the night of the incident with Lewis Burton. They were both in a bad state, and Caroline had injuries. After that night, she was charged with assault and was supposed to go to trial in March 2020.
She even told friends she’d rather die than have that footage made public. Green pointed out that the strict bail conditions, which kept her from contacting Lewis, probably made her mental health worse. It’s just awful to think about.
He argued that those conditions were unnecessary since Lewis didn’t want to press charges, and Caroline had her own place to go back to. Green believes that this isolation really affected her mental state. She was scared of more media attention if she challenged the order, which is just so tragic.
Just three weeks after that call, Caroline was found dead in her flat. Green thinks her life could have been saved if things had been different. Now, he’s helping her mom, Christine, find out what really happened.
