Catterick Primary School is still closed due to heavy snow and is reaching out for help to clear the area for safe access.
Catterick: The headteacher, Louise Newport, sent a letter to parents on Wednesday night. She mentioned reaching out to different agencies for help with clearing the roads and pavements around the school, but no luck so far.
She explained that they managed to clear a bit of the school driveway, but the thick ice under the snow made it tough. After five hours of hard work, the contractors had to stop because they couldn’t clear the roads.
Louise pointed out that the ice is making it really dangerous for anyone trying to drive or walk near the school. She even went to check things out herself and realized it would be impossible to open the school without risking everyone’s safety.
Access for emergency vehicles is also a big issue, which complicates things even more. She said, “The risk is too high, so to keep everyone safe, we have no choice but to close the school tomorrow.”
She understands how tough this is for everyone and that everyone wants the school to reopen. But her main job is to keep everyone safe and not put anyone in harm’s way.
Some parents have taken to social media, blaming North Yorkshire Council for not stepping in to help. Others have even suggested bringing in military personnel to assist with the situation.
Kevin Foster, the local councillor, mentioned he’s been pushing the highways department to help the school. He said it’s a tricky situation and he’s not sure what the best solution is.
He added, “The council has 5,800 miles of roads to manage, and it’s all about prioritizing the worst areas. I just wish I had a magic wand to clear all the snow. My phone has been buzzing non-stop with people needing help.”
A spokesperson from the Ministry of Defence said they haven’t received any official requests for help yet, but they’re ready to support the local community if needed.
