New Orleans: A man from Chelsea has been confirmed as one of the 14 victims in a tragic incident. Edward Pettifer, just 31, lost his life when a car drove into a crowd on New Year’s Day.

His family is heartbroken and is getting support from the Met Police. They’re trying to cope with the loss after the attack on Bourbon Street.

In total, 35 people were hurt when a man named Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, drove a pick-up truck into partygoers at around 3:15 AM. After that, he got out and started shooting before police shot him dead.

Edward’s family shared their devastation, saying he was a wonderful son and friend. They’re asking for privacy to grieve and remember him.

The coroner in New Orleans said Edward died from blunt force injuries. The Met Police is helping his family with the process of bringing his body back to the UK.

The Foreign Office is also in touch with US authorities to support the family. New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell expressed her condolences at a press conference, saying their thoughts are with the victims’ families.

Among those killed, one person remains unidentified, while the others were from the US, ranging in age from 18 to 63.

It seems the suspect acted alone. The FBI found an Islamic State flag in his vehicle, along with explosive devices nearby. President Biden mentioned that the attacker had posted a video showing he was inspired by the Islamic State.

Countries like Britain, France, Germany, and Mexico condemned the attack. UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer called it horrific and extended his thoughts to the victims and their families.

Foreign Secretary David Lammy assured that consular officials in the US are ready to help any British nationals affected by this tragedy.
