England: Wow, can you believe the numbers? Reports of kids being groomed for sex have skyrocketed by nearly 550% in just eight years. Back in 2016, there were about 1,157 cases. Fast forward to last June, and that number jumped to 7,479. That’s a staggering increase!
The Home Office data shows that this issue isn’t just a recent problem. In 2004-2005, there were only 186 cases. It’s like a snowball effect, with cases climbing to 1,157 in 2016 and then soaring to 4,625 the following year.
What’s even more alarming is that grooming gangs often target multiple victims. So, the actual number of kids affected could be way higher than the reported cases. Just think about that for a second.
Recently, it was revealed that police received two reports of child sex abuse by grooming gangs every single day over the past two years. This has sparked renewed calls for a national inquiry, especially from Labour.
Elon Musk even weighed in, criticizing PM Sir Keir Starmer and his safeguarding minister, Jess Phillips, after they dismissed calls for an investigation into grooming gangs in Oldham. Tory leader Kemi Badenoch warned that Starmer might face accusations of a cover-up.
Starmer claims that a thorough inquiry was already conducted by Prof. Alexis Jay, but many believe the recommendations from that report still need to be acted upon.
Reform MP Rupert Lowe is calling for transparency, saying, “Show the British people the full truth. I want prosecutions, and deportations.”
A Home Office spokesperson mentioned that grooming has been “historically under-reported and under-recorded,” emphasizing the need to uncover these crimes and bring the offenders to justice.
