In Darlington, children were seen on a frozen lake, raising safety concerns as temperatures dropped significantly in the area
Darlington: Recently, the weather took a chilly turn, dropping to minus three degrees. This cold snap left many areas, including South Park, covered in ice.
During this time, the County Durham and Darlington Fire and Rescue Service got some concerning reports. Kids were spotted walking on the ice and even trying to break it!
A spokesperson from the fire service shared that the freezing conditions have made some open water areas solid. They specifically mentioned South Park lake, where kids were seen playing dangerously.
Firefighters from Darlington Red Watch visited the park to remind everyone about the risks of frozen water. They stressed that it’s not safe to walk on ice-covered ponds or rivers.
They advised that the ice usually isn’t thick enough to support anyone’s weight. If someone falls through, it’s crucial to call 999 for help instead of trying to rescue them yourself.
They also provided some tips for anyone who might witness someone in trouble. First, talk to the person in the water and tell them to float on their back. Then, look for something to reach out to them, like a tree branch.
If you have something that floats, like a lifebelt, throw it to them. And if you’re using a rope, make sure to hold onto it securely. Safety first!
