A cleaning expert raises concerns about bleach damaging washing machines and suggests safer alternatives for maintenance
Birmingham: So, there’s this cleaning expert who’s really worried about bleach ruining your washing machine. You know how a lot of folks use bleach to keep things clean? Well, it turns out that might not be the best idea.
Julie Edelman, who’s known as The Accidental Housewife, shared her thoughts with Homes and Gardens. She says bleach does kill germs, but it’s pretty tough on your machine.
She pointed out that while bleach can zap bacteria and mold, it can also mess with your machine’s seals over time. And if any bleach lingers, it could even harm your clothes or irritate your skin. Plus, those fumes? Not great for anyone!
Experts in laundry are saying to ditch the bleach altogether. Instead, they recommend using white vinegar or oxygen bleach for a gentler clean. Tim Conn, who co-founded Image One USA, suggests running a hot cycle with a cup or two of white vinegar, then following it up with a sprinkle of baking soda.
He also mentioned that keeping your machine clean is key. Just wipe down the seals and dispensers with a damp cloth and some mild detergent. This helps get rid of odors and any leftover detergent gunk.
And if you’re still worried about your machine being dirty, Taylor Southerland, another cleaning expert, has some advice. He says the real issue might be your detergent. If it’s caking up, it’s not just your machine that’s affected; your clothes are too! He even joked that you might be walking around with a funky smell. Clean laundry shouldn’t have a strong scent, so if you love those scented detergents, you might need to clean your machine more often.
