Motorists in Lancashire risk hefty fines for neglecting their number plates this winter
Lancashire: So, here’s the deal. If you’re driving around this winter and your number plate is dirty, you could be looking at a fine of up to £1,000. Crazy, right?
With all the snow and freezing temps lately, the roads have been a bit of a mess. The highways folks have been out gritting the roads to keep things safe. But it’s not just about clearing the ice; you’ve got to make sure your car is ready too.
First off, check your windscreen wash. It needs to be full and clear because all that grit can quickly block your view. But here’s the kicker: if your number plate is dirty or hard to read, you’re breaking the law.
According to the Vehicle Excise and Registration Act 1994, you could get hit with a fine if your number plate isn’t visible. Sure, some folks might just get a £100 on-the-spot fine, but it can go up to £1,000 if you’re really unlucky.
Neil Worth, a road safety officer, mentioned that while there’s no law against having a dirty car, your number plate needs to be clear. It’s all about being able to identify vehicles when needed. So, it’s a good idea to give your number plate a quick wipe down regularly, especially in these winter conditions.
Plus, a dirty number plate can make it tougher for your car to be identified if something goes wrong. So, keep it clean and avoid those fines!
