Residents are worried about the unsafe condition of wooden sleepers outside Mildenhall Social Club, raising questions about responsibility.
Mildenhall: There’s been quite a stir about the wooden sleepers outside the social club. Folks are saying they’re in a pretty dangerous state, and it’s unclear who’s supposed to take care of them.
These sleepers have been around for over ten years, sitting on a raised area between Lark Road and Recreation Way. Cllr Andy Neal, who lives nearby, is really frustrated. Just last week, he had to take out some exposed metal bolts because parts of the sleepers were rotting away.
He mentioned how dangerous it was, especially for kids. If someone bumped into those bolts, it could really hurt them. He’s worried that as the wood continues to decay, more bolts will be exposed, making it even riskier.
One local resident chimed in, saying the whole area looks bad and feels unsafe. She’s not alone; many others in Mildenhall share her concerns.
The social club even got a quote for £11,000 a couple of months back to see if West Suffolk Council could help out with the repairs. Initially, Cllr Neal thought the social club was responsible for the sleepers.
However, Howard Sparey from the club looked into it and found out that the sleepers are actually outside their property lines. He agrees that the situation is dangerous and unsightly, but he’s stuck because there’s a dispute over the land.
Suffolk Highways is on the case, trying to figure out who’s responsible for the sleepers. They’ve checked out the site but said it doesn’t meet their criteria for intervention, claiming the sleepers aren’t a public danger.
West Suffolk Council has been asked for their take on the whole situation, but it seems like there’s still a lot to sort out.
