Residents worry about plans for new shops in Huddersfield’s old carpet store
Huddersfield: There’s some buzz about the old carpet shop on Westbourne Road. People are worried it might turn into a bunch of shops nobody wants.
The place used to be Marsh Carpets, but it shut down last September. Now, there are plans to turn the first floor into two homes and split the ground floor into three shops.
According to the paperwork, the owner tried to rent the whole shop but couldn’t find anyone. So, they thought smaller shops might attract more small business owners with lower rents.
But not everyone is on board. One local resident voiced their concerns, saying there are already empty shops nearby. They’re worried these new spots could just be more nail bars or vape shops, which the street doesn’t need.
Kirklees Council’s Environmental Health team hasn’t objected, but they do have some worries about noise and when the shops can open. They want to make sure construction doesn’t get too loud at odd hours.
The Highways department also has some questions. They’re okay with the idea but think there’s not enough info about where the bins will go and how to access them.
Everyone’s waiting for a decision, which is expected by December 12. Fingers crossed it turns out well for the community!
