North Yorkshire Council faces backlash over snow response as residents voice concerns about road safety and treatment
North Yorkshire: Recently, residents have been pretty vocal about the snow situation. They’ve taken to social media to express their frustrations, blaming the council for not handling the icy roads well.
One resident from Harmby was particularly upset. They posted about how the roads were still covered in snow and questioned what they were getting for their hefty council tax bill. It’s understandable to feel that way when you’re paying so much!
Luckily, a local farm contractor has cleared the main road through the village, which is a relief. But folks in Catterick Garrison are still worried. They think the town’s estates should be prioritized since it’s a military base.
In response, Cllr Keane Duncan from the council said their gritting crews have been working hard, even in tough conditions. He mentioned that areas like Richmond and Leyburn have been particularly challenging lately.
He praised the team for battling through heavy snowfall, ice, and freezing temperatures to keep the roads safe. They’ve even got about 100 farming contractors helping out in remote areas, which is pretty impressive.
With a road network stretching over 5,800 miles, the council has to prioritize the main routes. They treat more than half of the total network, which is quite an achievement compared to other authorities.
As the freezing temperatures continue, they’re urging everyone to stay vigilant and be careful on the roads. Richmond councillor Stuart Parsons noted that the market place is still quite slippery, but he acknowledged that the council has been responsive to specific issues raised.
He added that while it would be great for the council to do more, it ultimately comes down to money and resources. It’s a tough situation for everyone involved.
