Cruise passengers face a new ban on non-surge protected chargers, raising safety concerns and prompting urgent warnings from experts.
Miami: So, there’s been a big heads-up for cruise ship passengers about phone chargers. Royal Caribbean just put a ban on certain chargers, and it’s got folks talking.
Jason, a YouTuber from Travel Scouts, pointed out that many cruisers rely on these chargers since older ships don’t have enough outlets. But now, only surge-protected chargers are allowed on board.
In one of his videos, Jason mentioned how surprising this ban is. He said, “Royal Caribbean’s ban on non-surge protected power strips is a real shocker.”
He explained that these non-surge chargers have been okay for years, especially since older ships often lack enough outlets. It’s unclear why this change happened, but it’s interesting that some new ships had power issues recently.
Notably, Jason reminded everyone that not all cruise lines have this ban. If you’re cruising with other companies, you can still bring those non-surge protected chargers.
He also mentioned that if you’re on other Royal Caribbean brands, you’re in the clear too. But if you’re sailing with Royal Caribbean, you can only bring USB multi-plug devices.
According to the Royal Caribbean Blog, which is a go-to for cruise info, these power adaptors can be risky on older ships. They warned that overloaded power strips could lead to electrical damage or even fires.
The cruise line has made it clear that electrical extension cords, including power strips and multi-plug outlets, are on the no-go list. They said, “Electrical Extension Cords – including power strips and multi-plug outlets are prohibited.”
However, they do allow USB chargers that meet safety standards. Jason suggests that travelers might want to grab a USB hub before their trip. It’s a handy way to charge multiple devices at once.
