Crystal Mangum, who accused three Duke players of rape, now admits she lied about the incident two decades ago, seeking forgiveness.
Durham: So, here’s the scoop. Crystal Mangum, the woman who accused three Duke lacrosse players of rape back in 2006, has come clean. She admitted she made the whole thing up. Can you believe it?
She recently shared her story on a web talk show called *Let’s Talk with Kat*. Crystal, now 46, is currently in prison for a different crime—she killed her boyfriend in 2011. During the show, she said, “I testified falsely against them by saying that they raped me when they didn’t, and that was wrong.”
It’s a big deal because her accusations led to the players being arrested and the end of their season. Crystal expressed regret, saying she betrayed a lot of people who believed her. She hopes the players can forgive her and mentioned that she loves them.
Back in 2007, the Attorney General at the time, Roy Cooper, cleared the players of any wrongdoing. He said the charges should never have been filed since there was no solid evidence. The district attorney who took on the case even got disbarred for his actions.
The three players later sued the city of Durham and settled for some cash. They also reached a deal with Duke University. As for Crystal, she’s serving a long sentence but could be out as early as 2026. What a wild story, right?
