Elspeth Robinson receives MBE for her dedication to disabled individuals in Uganda
Darlington: Elspeth Robinson has been awarded an MBE for her amazing work with disabled people in Kumi, Eastern Uganda. She started the Kumi Community Foundation back in 2002.
After nearly 40 years as a physiotherapist, she found herself in Uganda after losing her job. She’s made 28 trips since then, and it’s really changed her life.
Initially, she treated a few kids with disabilities at the local hospital. But over time, she created a program to help families in rural areas facing extreme poverty and malnutrition.
Every year, Elspeth heads back to Kumi for about ten weeks to support people in remote areas. When she’s back in the UK, she works hard to fundraise for her program.
The awards were announced in January and recognize the efforts of members from Soroptimist International Great Britain & Ireland, who focus on supporting women and girls.
Other honorees included Dr. Kay Linnell, Ruth Smith, and Pamela Swain, all of whom have made significant contributions in their fields.
Ruth Healey, the president of SIGBI, expressed how proud she is of all the awardees, highlighting their dedication to their causes.
SIGBI has been around since 1934 and is part of a larger global organization that started in 1921, all about service and support.
