A vibrant new ‘book bench’ designed by local children is now on display at Cockerton Library in Darlington, showcasing their creativity.
Darlington: The Cockerton Community and Business Group held a fun competition for kids to design a new bench. They got some funding from local councillors and their own events to make it happen.
Judges from Darlington Libraries and the community group looked at all the entries and decided to mix and match ideas from several kids. It was a real team effort!
Lisa House, a local artist, brought the kids’ ideas to life. The bench features bright rainbows, stars, books, and a nod to Cockerton Green. It’s super colorful!
Kay Sandham, who chairs the community group, was thrilled with the response. She said the kids had such amazing imaginations and their caring nature really shone through in their designs.
They had a shortlist of 16 designs because there were just too many great ideas to pick just one. It was a tough choice!
Councillor Steve Harker, who leads the local council, mentioned how excited the kids were to see their ideas in the final artwork. He thinks the bench is fantastic and will brighten up the village.
Right now, the bench is inside Cockerton Library, but it’ll be moved outside when the weather gets better. It’s a lovely community project that shows how local efforts can really make a difference.
