Nominations are due soon for two council vacancies in Trevethin and Penygarn, following a recent resignation
Pontypool: So, there’s a deadline coming up for nomination papers to fill two council spots. This is all happening because Labour councillor Sue Malson stepped down back in November.
She used to represent the Trevethin and Penygarn ward on the Torfaen Borough Council and also the New Inn Upper ward on the Pontypool Community Council. Quite a bit of responsibility, right?
If you’re interested in running, you can drop off your nomination papers at the Torfaen Civic Centre. They’re open from 9:30 AM to noon and then again from 1 PM to 4 PM on weekdays, except Fridays when they close at 4 PM. Just make sure to get everything in by Friday, January 17.
If there are enough candidates, the elections will happen on Thursday, February 13. You can grab the nomination papers at the Civic Centre or download them from the Electoral Commission’s website.
Oh, and if you’re 16 or older, you can vote in these council elections. Just remember, you need to register by midnight on Tuesday, January 28. You can do that online at the government’s site.
Labour currently has a solid majority on the Torfaen Borough Council, with 17 members. The opposition is made up of two independent groups and a small Reform UK group. It’s going to be interesting to see how this all plays out!
