A dealer’s careless wink at a police officer led to his arrest during a drug drop-off
Rotherham: So, there was this dealer who thought he was being clever. He dropped off some drugs at a takeaway and even winked at someone sitting there. Turns out, that someone was a cop on his lunch break!
Leo Scales, 26, got pulled over by the police after his friend went into the takeaway on Main Street. The officers just wanted to check if he was fit to drive, but he insisted he had to chat with a buddy.
When he went inside, he casually placed wraps of heroin and cocaine on a table where the officer was sitting. Can you believe it? He even asked the cop if he’d seen anything suspicious!
Of course, the officer followed him outside, and Leo got arrested. He claimed the drugs were just for personal use, but the police found quite a stash. They discovered 4.5 grams of cocaine worth about £450 and several wraps of heroin.
They also found a phone with messages about selling drugs. It was clear he was dealing, especially since the cocaine needed to be broken down further. A bit of cannabis was found in his car too.
Leo admitted to having the drugs with the intent to sell and also had a bit of cannabis. He had a couple of previous convictions for similar stuff, so he wasn’t exactly a first-time offender.
His lawyer mentioned that Leo was trying to pay off a drug debt and even volunteers at a boxing club to help the homeless. He asked the judge to consider the pressure Leo was under, including a divorce and financial issues.
In court, they noted that it took a long time to charge him, and he hadn’t committed any crimes since the investigation started. The judge decided to suspend his two-year sentence, giving him a chance to turn things around.
She ordered him to do some community service and attend rehab for six months. The judge seemed to think there was a chance for Leo to get his life back on track, which is a bit of a silver lining in this messy situation.
