A driver in Devon has pleaded guilty to causing a fatal crash after claiming he fell asleep at the wheel, leading to a tragic accident.
North Devon: A tragic incident unfolded when Jason Rana, a 39-year-old driver, admitted he must have dozed off while driving. He was behind the wheel of a Peugeot 5008 when he veered into oncoming traffic, resulting in a head-on collision that claimed the life of 70-year-old Renata Soltys.
Rana appeared in Barnstaple Magistrates Court, where he pleaded guilty to causing her death through careless driving. The accident happened on June 4, 2023, and the court has scheduled a sentencing hearing for next month.
During the court proceedings, the prosecutor shared that Rana had crossed into the opposite lane, leading to the fatal crash. He reportedly admitted at the scene that he must have fallen asleep, which is just heartbreaking.
Police responded to the crash around 3:40 PM, but sadly, Soltys died at the scene. It’s been reported that no family members of the victim were present in court, and police have struggled to reach out to her relatives.
The magistrates have ordered a pre-sentence report and released Rana on unconditional bail until the next court date at Exeter Crown Court, set for February 10. In the meantime, he’s been given an interim driving ban while the case is ongoing.
