The rugby world is in mourning following the passing of Melvin Todd, a cherished figure in Devon’s sports community
Brixham: The local rugby scene is feeling a deep sense of loss after Melvin Todd, a beloved player and family man, passed away at 85. He was a real gem for Brixham Rugby Club, especially during its 150-year journey.
Mel played in the 1960s and was known for nurturing young talent. He was a key player who helped keep the club thriving during tough times. The club chairman shared heartfelt words, saying Mel was the backbone of Brixham Rugby.
Chris Forster, the chairman, expressed sadness over Mel’s passing, highlighting how he was part of the club’s rich history. Mel was known for his skills on the field, playing in the second row and even being a surprising kicker for a forward.
One memorable moment was when he kicked a goal so powerfully that the ball vanished, leading to a funny story about a fisherman finding it later. His friend Norman Marler recalled how Mel took younger players under his wing, helping them grow and succeed.
Mel’s impact went beyond the field. He worked at Brixham Steel Constructional and later ran his own business, focusing on trawlers. After retiring from playing, he became a lively presence at the club, organizing events and bringing joy to everyone.
As the club celebrates its 150th season, they remember Mel and all he contributed. The team sends their love and condolences to his daughters, Lisa and Mandy, and all who knew him. Rest in peace, Mel, you’ll be missed.
