Mansfield: So, get this. A man who was shot last month while the cops were trying to serve him a federal gun charge has been identified as the killer of an 18-year-old woman from Ohio. This case had been cold for 43 years! Crazy, right?

The police chief, Jason Bammann, said they reopened the case of Debra Lee Miller, who was tragically beaten to death back in April 1981. They decided to take a fresh look at it in 2021, thanks to new DNA technology and forensic methods.

He mentioned that they treated the case like it just happened yesterday, and the results were shocking. They managed to get a solid DNA profile from James Vanest, who was Miller’s upstairs neighbor at the time. He had been questioned back in the day but wasn’t seen as a suspect then.

Interestingly, Miller’s case was part of a larger investigation into suspicious deaths in the Mansfield area during the ’80s. There were even some allegations about police misconduct. A report from 1989 cleared the officers but raised some eyebrow-raising questions about their involvement with Miller.

Fast forward to now, and the DNA evidence against Vanest is strong enough that the prosecutor’s office was gearing up to take the case to a grand jury. But before they could, Vanest went off the grid.

After being found living in Canton, he initially lied to the cops about his involvement. But when they tried to interview him again, he clammed up and asked for a lawyer. Then he sold his house and took off to West Virginia.

Things took a wild turn when the feds came after him for gun charges. On November 18, U.S. Marshals and a SWAT team tried to arrest him at a hotel. Vanest ended up pointing a gun at them, and after a brief shootout, he was shot and killed.

The police chief said they consider the case closed now and hope this brings some peace to Miller’s family. It’s a bittersweet ending, but at least they finally know who did it.

Detective Terry Butler, who has a personal connection to the case, expressed how lucky he feels to have been part of solving a murder that happened when he was just a kid. He emphasized that they never give up and keep digging until they find the truth.
