In Caerphilly, many roads with 20mph limits may revert to 30mph after reviews and traffic surveys
The local council is set to review about 55 roads, but they received requests for nearly double that. Some roads didn’t make the cut because they were too close to schools or other sensitive spots.
Before any changes happen, council officers will need to do traffic surveys. This is all part of a broader review after the speed limit change sparked quite a bit of debate and even protests.
Ken Skates, the Welsh transport secretary, had started a listening program to hear from the public about which roads should be reconsidered. It seems like the government is now more open to feedback, especially after the initial rollout faced backlash.
If they find it’s safe to change a road back to 30mph, they’ll have to issue Traffic Regulation Orders. This will give folks another chance to voice their opinions.
The council is expected to wrap up traffic surveys by spring, and they’ve got some extra funding to help with this review. Some local leaders, like Cllr Kevin Etheridge, think the council should have listened to residents before making the initial switch.
It’s a bit of a mixed bag, but it sounds like the council is trying to find a balance between safety and community needs.
