Scotland is experiencing heavy snow and ice, leading to school closures and travel disruptions across the region.
Inverness: Scotland is really feeling the chill right now. A severe snow and ice warning is in effect, and it’s causing a lot of schools to close down. Over 150 schools and nurseries shut their doors on Thursday alone.
The yellow warning is set to last until 10 am Friday, covering a big chunk of the north and southeast. Areas like Grampian, the Highlands, Orkney, and Shetland are all affected. It’s a bit of a mess out there!
In the Highlands, more than 40 schools are closed, along with nearly 30 nurseries. Aberdeenshire isn’t faring much better, with 13 schools closed and some delaying their opening times due to the poor road conditions.
The Met Office is predicting more sleet and snow showers, especially in the northeast. They expect 1-4 cm of snow at lower levels and even more in the hills. So, if you’re out and about, watch out for icy patches!
Temperatures dropped significantly overnight, hitting a bone-chilling -12.4°C in Tulloch Bridge. Bear Scotland has been busy with gritters treating the roads, while Network Rail is keeping a close eye on the railways due to the cold.
ScotRail is warning passengers to be careful of icy spots at stations. They’re gritting key areas to keep everyone safe. January is usually the coldest month in Scotland, and this year is no different.
After this cold snap, things are looking up. By Monday, we could see temperatures rise to a much warmer 12°C. So, hang in there; spring is on the way!
