A disqualified driver has been sentenced to nine years for killing a beloved mother in Yate while driving under the influence
Yate: A tragic incident unfolded when a disqualified driver, Ashley Billing, took the wheel while drunk and hit Rebecca Ashmead, a beloved mum of four. She was just walking along Kennedy Way when he mowed her down and drove off, leaving her for dead.
Emergency services rushed to the scene, but sadly, Rebecca, 49, was pronounced dead right there. Billing didn’t stop after the crash, but police quickly tracked him down. Turns out, he was driving under the influence, which made the situation even worse.
At Bristol Crown Court, he faced the music and pleaded guilty to several charges, including causing death while over the limit. He got a nine-year sentence, which was reduced from twelve years because he admitted his guilt. Plus, he’s banned from driving for a decade.
Rebecca was described as the heart of her family, a loving mother and sister. Her family expressed relief that justice was served, but they know nothing can bring her back. They’re grateful for the support they’ve received and hope this tragedy raises awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.
Officer Anthony Hall, who worked on the case, praised Rebecca’s family for their strength during this tough time. He emphasized how reckless it is to drive under the influence, reminding everyone that such actions can have devastating consequences.
