A man was sentenced to life for murdering a driver who stopped to help him in the dead of night, shocking the local community.
St. Marys: So, there’s this really tragic story that happened in South Carolina. A guy named Rodney Watson, who was 66, stopped to help a man stranded on the road. But it turned out to be a huge mistake.
Watson was just driving to a store when he saw Michael Eugene Goode, 50, in need of a ride. His niece and a woman in the car recognized Goode, so they decided to help him out. But things took a dark turn.
Not long after they picked him up, the police got called to a fight at a mobile home. When they arrived, they found Goode attacking the woman in the front seat. Watson tried to intervene, but Goode pulled out a machete and stabbed him six times.
One of those stabs was really bad and cut an artery, which led to Watson’s death. Goode took off but didn’t get far; he was caught just hours later. He claimed he didn’t do it, but DNA evidence said otherwise.
After a trial, Goode was found guilty of murder and got a life sentence without parole. He also got five extra years for having a deadly weapon during the crime. It’s just heartbreaking, especially since Goode had a history of trouble with the law before this incident.
