Yorkshire: Drivers are being warned about a potential £2,500 fine for not clearing snow off their cars. It’s not just about the windscreen; the roof needs attention too.

Many folks remember to de-ice their windows, but that snow on top? It can be a real hazard. If it slides off while you’re driving, it could block your view or hit another car.

With the weekend coming up, everyone’s on edge about the roads and their wallets. The RAC has pointed out that while there’s no specific law against driving with snow on your roof, it can lead to penalties if it causes an accident.

Just think about it: if that snow falls onto your windscreen, you could be charged with “driving without due consideration.” That’s a risk no one wants to take.

Not clearing your windscreen can cost you £60 and three points on your licence. But if your car is deemed in a “dangerous condition,” the fines can skyrocket.

Along with the potential £2,500 hit, you might also rack up more points and even face a driving ban. The Highway Code is clear: you need a clear view before hitting the road.

Halfords’ expert, Andy Turbefield, mentioned that just four inches of snow can weigh as much as two washing machines. That’s a lot of weight up there!

This extra weight can make your car unstable. If that snow shifts while you’re driving, it could lead to a serious accident. Andy warns that during braking, all that snow could slide forward and block your view completely.

And let’s not forget about other drivers. If that snow lands on someone else’s car, it could break their windscreen. So, it’s really not worth the risk.
