Drones delivering weapons to UK prisons raise serious national security concerns
The prisons watchdog, Charlie Taylor, has pointed out that this is happening at two of England’s highest security prisons: HMP Manchester and HMP Long Lartin. He says it’s become a regular thing, and it’s really worrying.
These prisons hold some of the most dangerous criminals, including terrorists and gang leaders. Taylor mentioned that the authorities have basically lost control of the airspace above these jails. This means there’s a real risk of armed violence, escapes, and even hostage situations.
In his reports, he highlighted serious security failures. Gangs are using drones to deliver all sorts of contraband, like weapons and drugs, right to the inmates. It’s a huge concern for everyone involved.
Taylor emphasized that if serious weapons keep getting into these prisons, it could lead to some really dangerous situations. The potential for inmates to commit serious crimes or even escape is alarming.
He also noted that these gangs are using drones that can carry up to 3 pounds of contraband. They’ve been able to get things like “Zombie knives” and possibly even firearms into the prisons.
It’s crazy to think that if someone really wanted to, they could potentially get a gun inside. This could lead to inmates taking hostages or threatening staff to make their escape.
The reports also pointed out that both prisons have had issues with their CCTV and anti-drone systems. Officers at Manchester often see drones flying around at night.
Inmates have been breaking windows to help guide these deliveries, and at Long Lartin, they’re dropping contraband in bags that look like trash. It’s a sneaky way for them to get their hands on illegal items.
The prisons watchdog has already issued urgent notifications about the conditions at Manchester, calling it one of the most violent jails in the country.
In response, the Ministry of Justice says they’re working on improving security with new systems and better maintenance. They’re trying to tackle the serious organized crime that’s making these prisons so dangerous.
